Active Directory
A Microsoft technology to unify the management of an organisation's users, departments and IT resources.
AJAX
Asynchronous JavaScript and XML, a set of scripting languages used to create browser-based applications that behave more like software applications.
Content management system
A system used to manage the content of a website. Also abbreviated to CMS.
GITC
Government Information Technology Conditions, a set of standing terms and conditions for public sector information technology purchases.
GNU Public Licence
A popular license for free software, created by the Free Software Foundation.
GST
Goods and Services Tax, an Australian tax of 10% on all goods and services.
HTML
Hyper Text Markup Language, the predominant language used to create web pages.
LAMP
Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP, a combination of free software programs used together to run dynamic Web sites.
LDAP
Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, a networking protocol for querying and modifying an organisation's users, departments and IT resources.
Open source
Software that is freely available for anyone to use or modify.
OpenID
A decentralised single sign-on system.
Organic listing
A free, naturally occurring listing in search engine results.
RDBMS
Relational Database Management System.
RSS
RDF Site Summary (or known colloquially as "Really Simple Syndication"), a family of data feed formats used to share information over the Internet.
SERP
Search engine results page, a page listing the results of a search conducted by a search engine.
Spam
Unsolicited email, or "junk mail".
Spam bot
An automated "robot" that scans the web for email addresses to be added to spam lists. Not good.
Tag cloud
A visual depiction of textual content tags. The bigger the font used for the tag, the more popular or frequent the term.
Web Services
Self-contained business functions that operate over the Internet.
WYSIWIG
"What You See Is What You Get" - this means a word processor style editor.
